Corona Virus Update

Covid has impacted on our planned work of moving Christchurch forward as a Dementia Friendly town. We are now putting our efforts into sharing information that could assist carers with support and activities during these unprecedented times. We are also available at the end of the phone to assist in way we can and look forward to the time when it is safe for us to actively resume with our plans.

The Herbert Protocol encourages families, carers, friends or neighbours to hold information about a person with Dementia. This could help the emergency services find the person if they go missing.

Christchurch Celebrates working to become Dementia Friendly.

Sept 2019 - Over 40 people representing the whole spectrum of business, church and community life in Christchurch gathered to hear about the campaign to make Christchurch a Dementia Friendly Town, as accredited by the Alzheimer’s Society.
The event, organised by the Christchurch Community Partnership and hosted by the Red House Museum, was introduced by CCP Chair, Rev Sandra Prudom, followed by a few words from the Town Mayor, Cllr Lesley Dedman on behalf of the Christchurch Dementia Friendly Community Alliance, with an interactive presentation from Project Manager, Lydia Brown inviting all those organisations present to sign up in support. Laura Bullivant of the Red House also talked about the ‘Still Curious’ project that they are running for those living with dementia and their carers funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and including a Memory Café and Dementia Walks.
Rev Sandra Prudom in her introduction said “it is essential for all of us to have a greater awareness about dementia – so that we can support both those living with it, and their carers, to be able to live as well as possible and continue to feel an integral part of our community.”
There was a great deal of enthusiasm from those invited – ranging from local Care Homes and solicitors, to Banks, churches and other charities, to avail themselves of the free Dementia Friends Information Sessions that are being offered across the community over the next six months. There is also a free environment check that is offered to organisations to help them make their buildings dementia friendly.
Lydia Brown said “We are thrilled with the buy in from so many organisations – and the desire expressed to make Christchurch a truly dementia friendly community. Together we can make this a reality!”
